Sri Lankan High Commission Promotes Tourism and Trade at Menlyn Mall, South Africa

In celebration of World Tourism Day on 27 September, the Sri Lankan High Commission in Pretoria hosted a tourism and trade promotional event at Menlyn Mall, one of Africa’s largest shopping destinations. The three-day event, from 27 to 29 September, aimed to position Sri Lanka as a premier tourist destination and showcase its rich cultural heritage, arts, crafts, and local products.

Under the theme "Sri Lanka Trade Showcase," the Sri Lankan stall was designed to capture the essence of the island nation’s tourism appeal, promoting an array of offerings, including cosmetics, food, tea, batik clothing, and traditional arts and crafts. The event began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, a Sri Lankan ceremonial custom, in the presence of Pretoria’s diplomatic community, South African government officials, and distinguished guests from the Sri Lankan community in South Africa.

The stall featured the world-renowned Sri Lankan cosmetic brand Spa Ceylon, marking its debut in Pretoria. Previously available only at the brand’s Durban branch, Spa Ceylon showcased its full range of luxurious products, distributing free samples to visitors throughout the event.

Guests were treated to a variety of authentic Sri Lankan delicacies such as Kiribath (milk rice), Mung Kavum, Kokis, Kottu, Wade, and fish cutlets, served with hot cups of the famous Ceylon tea, courtesy of the well-known tea brand Dilmah.

Sri Lankan arts and crafts were presented by SithuWam Arts, while Sumudu Sela exhibited vibrant batik clothing. The food stalls were arranged by T&S Foods and Lotus Cuisines, two South African startups founded by Sri Lankan-origin entrepreneurs. The event attracted over 1,000 visitors during the three days.

In addition to the cultural displays, leaflets and brochures about Sri Lanka’s tourism attractions were distributed to encourage more South African tourists to explore the island's breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and unique experiences.
